HOW ASSISTANCE IS PROVIDED

Eligibility for assistance is determined through a structured review process that considers financial need, medical documentation, insurance coverage, and available program funding. Because funding is limited, we will confirm what we can cover before anything is due.

Applicants may receive one of the following levels of support:

• Full assistance
• Partial financial assistance
• Navigation and educational support

Outside assistance from other organizations will be considered during the review process and may be applied for before Open Chair Project funds are allocated.

Access to Medical Providers:

Through our coordinated care pathway, participants may be connected with a dermatology provider for telehealth evaluation, prescription management, and medical treatment recommendations when appropriate.

Next Steps After Approval:

Once your application has been reviewed and approved, a member of The Open Chair Project team will contact you with next steps.

Your Scalp Diagnostic Analysis — $75. Before any recommendation is made, we perform a trichoscopic scalp analysis: magnified imaging of your scalp, follicles, and remaining hair at 50–200x. This shows what a visual exam can't — follicle miniaturization, scarring, inflammation, and density patterns.

What the $75 covers:

• Magnified trichoscopic imaging of your scalp

• Documented findings prepared for clinical review

• Your imaging file, yours to keep and share with any

provider or insurer

What it does not cover:

The $75 pays for the imaging and documentation only. Interpretation and diagnosis are performed by a licensed provider at a separate appointment.

Your next step: a telehealth visit We can connect you with our partnered dermatology provider, who will review your imaging with you, discuss findings, and determine whether a diagnosis and letter of medical necessity are appropriate.

That visit is billed separately — by your insurance if you have it, or at our reduced self-pay rate if you don't. We will tell you that cost before you book.

You are also free to take your imaging to your own dermatologist. Many women do, and we'll send the file wherever you ask us to.

Why this matters for insurance: cranial prostheses are often covered when a claim includes a specific diagnosis and a letter of medical necessity. Generic "alopecia" is usually not enough. This imaging is designed to give whichever provider you see what they need to document your case properly.

The $75 is not a deposit toward a prosthesis. Because it pays for a service that is performed and documented, it is non-refundable once completed — but fully refundable if you cancel before your appointment.
